The best extra virgin olive oils to buy in the UK have been named, and Asda’s and Lidl’s products beat M&S.

The best extra virgin olive oil to buy in the UK has been named, with a full list including own-brand versions from Waitrose, M&S, Asda, Aldi and Lidl. Extra virgin olive oil is generally more expensive than regular olive oil, so it’s a real treat when the household decides to buy it. With that in mind, if you’re spending a bit extra for extra virgin olive oil to use in sauces, dressings or marinades, you want it to be tasty and rich in flavour. The consumer and product experts at Good Housekeeping have come up with a ranking of the best extra olive oils on the market, with several supermarket own-brand products making the list. The Good Housekeeping Institute enlisted a consumer panel to taste 45 types of extra virgin olive oil to determine the best available to UK shoppers.

In first place is the Rise & Fall Polyphenol Rich Extra Virgin Olive Oil 500ml, which costs £25. This organic Spanish extra virgin olive oil stood out for its “exceptionally high polyphenol count”.

Additionally, it was praised for its vibrant and “glossy-green” appearance, as well as its rich aroma and peppery, rocket-like finish. The consumer experts also pointed out the beautifully designed bottles that shoppers would likely keep long after the oil inside had been used.

Several brand names make up the top five, with the first supermarket entry coming in at number six. The Waitrose No.1 Valli Trapanesi Olive Oil 500ml took the number six spot, and was praised for its bold and vibrant flavours.

Following that were several other non-supermarket brand names, with an Asda product then landing at the number 10 spot. Meanwhile, Lidl found itself at number 12 on the list, while Sainsbury’s was at 16, Aldi at 18 and M&S at 19.

Each bottle of extra virgin olive oil was given a final score out of 100 after evaluation. The full list of the best products includes 21 olive oils for UK shoppers to try.
